Anyone ever tried home remedies for bed bugs

Has anyone out there bought store products that got rid of bed bugs? I sure don't have $5,000 to invest in an exterminator.

I was told to get mattress protectors, box springs protectors, pillow encasements which, I can afford but is there anyone out there that has had this problem & gotten rid of them without hiring a very expensive exterminator.

Never had this problem before until my charming husband stayed at a hotel while on the road & brought the hitchhikers home with him when he had home time!
