Dwain, you will always hear mixed information about trucking companies. The larger the more variety of feedback you will get.
You have to try and determine what is legitimate complaints and how much is from misunderstanding, unreasonable expectations, etc.
I have been hearing some drivers say that a few companies had trained them and then let them sat for weeks waiting to get in a truck, but that was months ago. Freight has been picking up some since then so that might not still be the case.
your doing the right thing though, asking around.
When you say a school ripping you off, I don't know exactly what you mean. If the is the wording that the people complaining used, you don't know what that means either.
Now if they are referring to the school took their money and trained them but they can't get a job because their record is trashed, that would be seen by some as a rip off and that happen, but I don't know if I would call it a rip off unless the school is telling them you WILL get a trucking job.
If a person knows he has a terrible record he should call trucking companies and see if they would hire a licensed person with such a record before he or she spends the money to get the CDL.
The schools should do a better job of warning the people of these things but really that is the person's responsibility to ask questions to someone.
