Female truck mechanic
by Holly
(Uk)
I am a 17 year old girl in the uk. I am an apprentice HGV mechanic and I love it. I want to drive them as soon as I'm old enough to take the test as well.
I love what I do and wouldn't change it for he world although plenty of men think different. I'm either seen as some sort of sex icon as apparently quite a lot of men seem to like a girl in overalls and boots covered in oil?
Or I get seen as stupid because according to some it's wrong for a girl to be a mechanic!

Response: Well I don't think I need to say this Holly, you sound pretty well grounded with a strong sense of self, but I will say it for the benefit of anyone else who may need it...
DON'T let the comments of the shallow minded who are afraid of change ever place doubt in your mind about doing what you love to do.
I am sure there will be smart shop owners and fellow mechanics who recognize passion and skills comes in many forms.
Being a mechanic and then getting behind the wheel automatically puts you in a more powerful position than many male drivers.
How are they going to put you down for being ambitious. Just laugh and shake it off.
Thanks for checking in with us from the UK
