Is There a Such Think As a Homeless trucker?

I am not a trucker but a trucker's wife & my husband told me this after his co-driver left the truck & company cold turkey. Here is the story.

Well my husband took down time & his co-driver who was basically a kid was left on his own to go solo while my husband took time off & the kid couldn't take it & when it came time to pick up my husband, his co-driver told him that he quit ASAP leaving my husband to go solo till the company found him a team driver.

The problem is this kid that they put on the truck with my husband lived 4 states away & my husband asked his fleet manager to give him a team driver that was from our area & the FM told my husband that he would work with him.

Well while my husband was out on the road, he gets a phone call from this guy that the FM gave my husband's cell phone # to him & he says to my husband that he heard he was looking for a team driver & my husband asked him where he was from & what shocked me was the guy's reply.

He told my husband that he was homeless & that when my husband would have down time for my husband to drop him off at the nearest cheapest motel. I never heard of this.

The FM gave my husband's # to this guy but the FM never had the courtesy to call my husband to give him a head's up on this guy. And by the way I forgot to mention that my husband is new to trucking.

He has only been driving for about 4 months. My main concern is & I told my husband this that my definition of the cheapest motel is roach & bedbug city!

Yes I know you can still get bedbugs from a 5 star hotel or motel but I sure don't want this guy picking up unwanted guests & it gets on his clothes or bedding & brings these unwanted guests into the sleeper berth & then in turn my husband brings these unwanted pests home because I read where bedbugs are very hard to get rid of.

But since I am brand new as a trucker's wife, is there experienced truckers out there that has had the same situation or has heard of this.

I mentioned to my husband how is this guy getting paid because banks need a physical address & my husband told me that the fuel credit card that these trucking companies give truckers to fuel up their trucks, that you can arrange for your pay to be deposited onto this card.

I told my husband to call his FM & really check this guy out because I have a bad feeling about this. So any suggestions or comments, I sure would gladly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Lots of Homeless Truckers
by: The Crazy Trucker

Yes there are plenty of homeless truckers.

I often tell people I meet whos relative, friend etc is looking for a job and is down and out.

That trucking can be a tool for them to get back on their feet.

Once they get into a truck at a company that loves keeping them out on the road, they can just sleep in the truck and rebuild.

Work an honest job, rebuild their credit, save up money and not worry about rent, electric, water bills or even buying flashy clothes to compete with peers or co-workers in warehouse/office environment jobs.

Trucking is the PERFECT opportunity for people to get back on their feet.

You never know what people are going through and how they end up in a financial bind including but not limited to homelessness.

It's smart not to judge because most of us are actually a medical emergency plus one more unfortunate event at the same time and we can be on the path to homelessness!

I can understand you being concerned and questioning the situation though.

And I don't know why these trucking companies put truckers like your husband into a training or teaming situation with that little experience.

It's ridiculous. Six month minimum should be the exception to a rule of 1 year experience before letting a driver train.

Unfortunately however, that is not the rule. So we have alarming situations that come up pretty often with new drivers and new trainers.

Sending you all white light and good vibrations and praying that all is well and flows smoothly in the end.

Rude people
by: Michael

All these people being anonymous and saying rude things to this lady makes no sense. She is concerned and looked for guidance/ thoughts to help her understand something she is new to. Nothing wrong with that at all.

It’s not unheard of to have people be homeless in Truckee. Usually they just use a relative‘s address as their homebase for Mail and a drivers license. I personally worry about people like that, with no family ties there’s not a lot to motivate them to take time off. But I don’t know anything about the driver. I would expect my company to possibly assist in helping me find a team driver if I was interested, but I would personally rather know the person that I was teaming with if I ever was going to go that route. Good luck and understanding what you’re looking for

As a trucker daughter I agree. Also this man could bring drugs into the truck. Or be violent. Nowadays you can't be to careful.
