I'd go to the school vs. OJT because of all the changes in trucking now. Electronic logs being mandatory this year, plus the pre-trip inspection in Illinois is the most difficult of any state. Pre-trip is about 150 questions and the Illinois DMV will fail you for silly things such as calling an "air pressure indicator" a "air pressure guage" and many other things on the test just as silly. If you don't pass the pre-trip inspection exactly, word for word, they won't even give you the road test. Not only that, you have to physically touch each part your inspecting, name the part, say out loud what you're looking for, such as "broken,leaking,loose,etc. The formal training at FFE will help you get through all that; it won't be easy, but if your lucky,you can pass the first or second time you try. The school is only 160 hours which includes formal classroom training, driving on the yard, local driving.
All other cdl schools are basically the same.

FFE (Frozen Food Express) is a good outfit and will pay for school at Prairie State College in Chicago then put you on the road. If the college is too far to commute every day, they'll pay for hotel room and meals during classroom training.
