Need a Second Chance Trucking - 5 yrs experience

by Paul
(Illinois)

I was an otr driver for two companies from fall of 2015 until fall of 2020. One of the companies will give a good reference, the other will not as they terminated me for safety.

On October 31, 2020 a little after 2300 hours I fell asleep at the wheel and struck a bridge. The truck was totaled and had to be towed.

No injuries. No drugs or alcohol involved. The weather conditions were dry and this happened right outside Chicago. I received a ticket for improper lane change. I was totally at fault.

The accident affected me to the point that a month after the accident I moved to another state and didn't transfer my cdl. Instead I applied for and received just a regular drivers license. I've been driving a cab now and with a perfect driving record since then.

As you may have guessed, I decided to give trucking another chance. I went back to trucking school and received a new CDL in January 2024. I have a current two year medical card. My DAC is clean. My Clearinghouse is spotless. Zero points on my driving record.

I'm 52 years old. It's been almost 4 years since the accident and no one will hire me...not even Western Express, lol.

Most of my previous cmv experience was regional work out of Denver...alot of mountain driving in winter weather. I'm now living in the Chicago area. Just need a chance.

Hopefully you'll find a company Paul. You might have to go after tough trucking jobs are harder to fill.

Have you tried the aggregate trucking companies out in your area?

Also, piggy back truck movers might be willing to hire you. The company actually named Truck Movers, lol. The send me an email about every other day for drivers.

If nothing else works though, maybe go with a moving company as a helper than slide into driving.

If you look at job board for entry level trucking jobs, they will likely hire you too I think. Because obviously you are not new but if they hire new then they you're as good a bet as a new trucker.

Except you have that on your record still. I think higher insurance could be what's hurting you so much.

Keep trying though, I'm sure with that incident so long ago, you'll find something.
