Yep, the pre-trip. The DMV won't give you a road test unless you pass the pre-trip on the truck and trailer. It's usually 150 questions and the DMV officer will be with you with his clipboard. You have to touch every item your inspecting and name it and say out loud what it is and what your looking for. You have to name the item by what's on his clipboard, not what some driver on the street told you.

Doesn't matter how you get the cdl, you have to pass the pre-trip inspection at the DMV and that is the hardest part of getting a cdl.

Good luck finding a decent job that way because you won't. Times have changed and insurance companies call the shots on who can be hired by trucking companies. Insurance companies won't give their approval if you don't have some type of formal training and a graduation certificate.
Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes, there are, but it's a long bumpy road.
