The Mrs.

by Shae Spates

Hello all! My name is Shae and my husband is a truck driver. We have been married for almost a year now. We have 2 and a half kids (one on the way) and my husband has just signed on to be an owner operator.

When we met, he was OTR and then he shifted to a local route to be home with the family but now with the economy taking the turns that it has and a baby on the way, he decided that becoming an owner operator was best for the family.

I am a little overwhelmed by this shift and I have less than a month to prepare myself. My plan is to keep track of his books for him and also stay positive and encouraging to him.

Well i hate to be the bear of bad news but everyone i know that has thought of going o/o in this economy is now homeless and struggling. Sure o/o make a WHOLE lot more money than company drivers, but the truck will eat EVERY DIME OF IT! Between maintenance, isfa, fuel, insurance, ect ect ect ect ect ect there will be little money left. In order to pay for everything AND the truck payment combined, that truck will have to RUN and RUN HARD! You may have to get used to going a while without seeing your driver as many o/o's are having to stay out an average of 3-4 months (atleast all the ones i know) just to make ends meet. As being a "seasoned" trucker's wife I have seen MANY MANY drivers try going o/o and end up loosing everything and the shirt on their backs. While few are struggling through all the regulations, restrictions, ect and trying hard to keep up with dot regulations and state laws, many are falling behind. Please Please Please do your homework and think about this carefully. Wishing the best of luck to you and your family......
