I have driven a vacuum truck for about 8 years in Texas and Louisiana. It does generally pay more than typical OTR driving jobs. With the right company, drivers have made over $100,000 per year on the high end and as little as $50,000 on the low end with some companies.
It is more dangerous than most other types of trucking though. There are a lot of accidents in this line of work.
I have had one wreck since I have been doing this, and know several people that have been killed or seriously injured. Having off road trucking experience is helpful; if you don't have any, you will get it in the oilfield.
The very worst part where I work is wearing fire resistant clothing in the summer heat.
