When I turn 18 what type of trucking job shoud get

by Shawn
(Atlanta)

Which is a better option for me and why:

A)When I'm 18 I should get my Class B and drive local in dump trucks and go to school and wait until I turn 21 to get my class A and drive tractor-trailers out of state

or

B)When I'm 18 I should get my class A and try to find a local job with a tractor-trailer that doesnt go out of state.

I'm 16 and I am wondering what is the best option for me when I turn 18. If you have a choice C, please feel free to let me know what it is. thanks yo

Most companies demand you are 21

I know most companies want you to be 21. You may have an issue being 18--wait a few years, and definitely go for it.

Hi Shawn,

First of all congratulations for being smart enough to be thinking ahead about your future. You will be far ahead of a lot of your peers. Your parents must be proud.

If I were you I would go ahead and get my Class A's. Who knows what extra hoops they will make you jump through if you wait 2 years.

Fortunately being in the A, you have a lot of options. Basically, which ever deal works out better for you would not necessarily be better or worst than the other, experience in both could benefit you as you go forward.

With the dump truck, there is good opportunity when you get up with the right company. This guy in Greensboro has like 4 dump trucks and doing well.

With the in state tractor you will be able to say you have that time behind the wheel of big truck so that's good too.

Which one is closest to your big picture, your ultimate goal as a trucker. Do you want to hit the big road. Or do you want to try and stay local.

There is a possible C for you. If you plan on going over the road and you want to travel now plus make more money down the road and over the road. Maybe you would like getting a job with a moving company.

Whether you start as a helper or a driver. Learning how the process works there and getting your experience while your waiting on turning 21 will put you in a pretty good position to make some good money.

Especially If you want to be an owner operator one day. (Nice profit margin in moving)

Hope this helped you
